Email From UNICEF Help Nepal Now

URGENT: On May 12, a second earthquake of 7.3 magnitude struck Nepal--a country still reeling from a 7.9 earthquake that claimed over 8,000 lives.
Dear Joseph,
The first quake last April 25 affected 7 million people--1.7 million of them are children in need of urgent assistance. As search and rescue operations unfold in the aftermath of the second earthquake, UNICEF will be assessing in the coming days how many more children need to be reached and provided with critical aid. We have been working around the clock to deliver more life-saving supplies to children since the first earthquake hit—which include tents, safe drinking water, hygiene kits, medical supplies, toilets, and more. You can still help.

The post above was part of an email I received today. I posted it here so that others can help. Click the link below to read or you can click the title above and donate to help Nepal earthquake victims

  12. Small Town Lottery or STL – An alternative introduced in 2005 when President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo tasked the PCSO to help in the campaign to stamp out jueteng and to democratize charity at the national and local levels . The PCSO Board of Directors approved a resolution calling for a test run of the S-T-L on December 28, 2005. Resolution No. 464 likewise, effected the approval of the rules and regulations governing the conduct of STL in select pilot areas in Luzon.
    • The new STL is a democratized form of the grassroots-based lottery and charity first introduced during the time of President Corazon Aquino. Incorporating the lessons learned from the first STL, the new, reinforced STL was launched in mid-February 2006 under a test-run mode. This experimental feature of the new STL gives it the flexibility to institute needed changes during its test-run phase. It is a feature that was absent during the first STL.
    • By operating under a test-run mode for a period of one (1) year, the PCSO was able to adopt changes needed to make the game effective as a local governments-based charity mechanism for PCSO, even as the new STL provided livelihood for those displaced by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s anti-jueteng campaign.
    • The PCSO executed contracts with private corporations for the test runs of STL, with the understanding that a contract can be revoked if a corporation violated any of the provisions in its approved contract.
    • In late March 2006, the National Police Commission, in coordination with PCSO, released guidelines for STL operations to policemen. Under the guidelines, police cannot arrest anybody authorized by the PCSO to operate the STL except if there are complaints from the PCSO, local government officials, religious groups, and non-government organizations. Arrests can also be conducted when operators violate Republic Act 9287 or the anti-illegal gambling act.
    • Under the STL charity fund sharing scheme, revenues accruing to STL will be divided as follows: city or municipality, 10 percent; provincial government, 5 percent; congressional district, 2.5 percent; and PNP, 5 percent. To effectively decentralize the use of charity funds, the proceeds of STL will directly reach the local government units. It will go to the municipal treasurer’s office. PCSO executed memorandum of agreements (MOAs) with local government units on how to disburse the funds given to them via STL. The remaining 7.5 percent of the charity fund will go to PCSO.
    • Implementing the STL has allowed PCSO to provide immediate and localized funding assistance for health and developmental projects in various localities.
    • By end of 2007, PCSO has launched the STL in 15 approved test run areas. These include: Quezon province, Angeles City, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, Pampanga, Laguna, Bulacan, Negros Oriental, Iloilo City, Tarlac, Oriental Mindoro, Ilocos Norte, Albay, Olongapo City, Batangas.
    • During its first year of operations (2006-2007), STL generated revenues totaling to more than P3B, creating about 62,500 jobs and livelihood for displaced cabos and cobradores, as well as for the organic staff of the agent-corporations.
    • To date, the PCSO temporarily stopped processing new applications for Small Town Lottery (STL) agency pending a comprehensive review of the project. The PCSO Board of Directors approved a recommendation of its Technical Working Group, which suggested that the agency wrap up first its assessment of the STL dry-run before accepting new applications from gaming proponents.
    • “The comprehensive review of the STL is being undertaken for the purpose of putting in place all the necessary features to make its operations as transparent, honest and credible as the lotto. PCSO may resume accepting applications after finishing its assessment of STL, depending on overall findings after the evaluation” explained PCSO General Manager Rosario C. Uriarte.

Bartolomeo Cristofori - Piano Inventor

  1. Bartolomeo Cristofori was credited to have invented the piano and he was born on 4 May 1655 in Padua, Northern Italy.
  2. He was employed by Ferdinando de' Medici, Grand Prince of Tuscany, as the Keeper of the Instruments.
  3. Cristofori was an expert harpsichord maker and was very familiar with the previous body of knowledge on creating stringed keyboard instruments.
  4. According to his employers, the Medici family, one of his pianos was already in existence by the year 1700. Another document of doubtful authenticity indicates that the piano was invented in the year 1698. Three pianos made by Bartolomeo Cristofori survive today. They all date from the 1720s.
  5. The piano is founded on earlier technological inventions. Why was the piano invented? The piano was perhaps a result of trying to improve on the clavier and harpsichord. The harpsichord was loud but it had no control of dynamics. There was little expressive control of each note and it was almost impossible to add emotion to the music. The clavier had a certain degree of dynamics but it was too quiet. The new invention, the piano was able to combine the loudness of the harpischord with the dynamics of the clavichord.
  6. He called his invention a “gravecembalo col piano e forte” – a clavichord with soft and loud. The name was shortened to pianoforte and then simply piano.
  7. Francesco Mannucci, a musician at the Medici court, described one early version as “a large ‘Arpicembalo’ [the name of a type of harpsichord] by Bartolomeo Cristofori, of new invention that produces soft and loud, with two sets of strings at unison pitch, with soundboard of cypress without rose”.
  8. It was Sebastian LeBlanc, a family friend who suggested that the black and white keys be switched on the piano. On Cristofori's earliest pianos, the accidental keys were white and the natural keys were black, the exact opposite of what exists today.
  9. Although Cristofori's early instruments were made with thin strings and were not as loud as modern pianos, the pianoforte (as it was called later) was considerably louder and had more sustaining power than the clavichord. It was now possible to evoke emotion into the music. Musicians were now able to control the volume of their instrument and composers could write with that important feature in mind.
  10. However, the piano was not popular at first and many felt it was too difficult to play. Cristofori died largely uncelebrated for an invention that would later change the musical world in 1731 – a year before the first sheet music for the piano appeared.
  11. The term “piano” is actually absurd. “Pianoforte” sounds as ridiculous to an Italian speaker as “softloud” does to English speakers!
  12. The oldest surviving piano was built by Cristofori in 1720 and is on display at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. It was painstakingly restored to playable condition by Stewart Pollens, who managed the Met’s collection of over 5000 instruments for three decades, until 2006.

Fans and analysts regard Reyes as the greatest pool player of all time.

    FREDDIE ROACH

    1)   “I am so glad that Mayweather is big on Shots, because he is going to be taking a lot of them from Manny on May 2.”
    2)   “Mayweather may be two victories shy of tying Rocky Marciano’s record (49-0) but I can assure you Mayweather’s party will end on May 2 and Marciano’s record will remain just that—the record.  And Mayweather will forever be known as Mr. 47 and 1.”
    3)   "I really don't think Mayweather wants this fight. He was forced into it by the public, the press, and by Showtime. Mayweather ran out of road."
    4)   "Going against Floyd Sr. is a little disappointing. He just isn't very good, especially during the fight itself. One of our advantages is having him in the other corner."
    5)   “We’re fighting the best fighter in the world, but we’re going to kick his ass.”
    6)   "When Manny beats Mayweather, it won't only be about unifying the welterweight titles, it will also be a public service to boxing."

    MANNY PACQUIAO

    7)   "This is the moment I believe he will experience his first loss."
    8)   "In my mind, I was more worried about the fight when I fought De La Hoya and Cotto than this fight."
    9)   "The Lord, my God, will deliver him into my hands on Saturday.”

    FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR.

    10)   “Whatever happens on Saturday, it’s going to be one-sided. Pacquiao is going to sleep"
    11)   “Floyd's the man to meet, If you wanna get beat.”

    FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR.

    12)   “Everybody’s game plan is to come forward and throw lots of punches. It hasn’t worked in 19 years and 47 fights.”
